Robert Brown - Partner

Robert Brown is a member of The Times Law Panel and ranked as a leader in the field of Crime by Chambers 2010.

Robert Brown joined Corker Binning as a consultant in 2001, and became a partner in 2007. Before that he was a partner at Darlington & Parkinson. He is a highly respected criminal litigator and advocate with 20 years' experience in cases ranging from general crime to fraud, extradition and regulatory matters. 

Robert has defended in all types of criminal cases, from road traffic cases for high profile individuals to homicide and large-scale conspiracies.

Fraud work includes the defence of a £35 million mortgage fraud, cases of fraudulent trading, customs duty evasion and international drugs trafficking. Recent cases include representing a solicitor in a major money laundering conspiracy; challenging by Judicial Review the Financial Service Authority's power to prosecute; advising UK and overseas individuals and companies on mutual assistance and extradition and company fraud; advising directors and companies on breaches of market regulations; and representing a number of high profile individuals accused of criminal conduct. 

Between 1998 and 2000 Robert Brown advised Captain Nikitin of the former Soviet Navy on his application to the European Court of Human Rights on charges of espionage and high treason, of which he was eventually acquitted.

Robert was co-designer and co-author of the first edition of Archbold Magistrates Courts Practice, launched in January 2005, the first significant new magistrates court practitioners guide to be published for many years. He contributed chapters on disclosure, sexual offences, drug offences, offences of violence, and mentally disordered offenders.

Robert Brown is a past president of the London Criminal Courts Solicitors' Association, a member of the Academic Review Board of the Open University Law Programme and a committee member of the Criminal Law Solicitors' Association. He was elected to the specialist Criminal Defence seat on the Council of the Law Society in August 2005. He is also Vice Chairman of the British Russian Law Association. 

He is a regular broadcaster and writer on criminal law, appearing on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Law in Action, and Newsnight, among others.

Robert studied law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and qualified as a solicitor in 1983. Between 2000-2002, Robert acted as director of a team of international jurists advising the Russian government on amendments to the Federal Constitution of 1993.
