Corporate Social Responsibility
At Corker Binning we believe that all businesses, large and small, can contribute to their communities as well as trying to lighten the burden of business on the environment. For our firm it takes the form of supporting a particular environmental initiative or a sportsperson, charity or artist. It's also about providing opportunities for all our people to serve the community.
Corker Binning is part of the Lawyers in Schools programme run by the Citizenship Foundation. As part of the programme our lawyers work with young people to develop their awareness and understanding of the law. Corker Binning is currently working, in conjunction with a charity called Groundwork, with a group of 12 children at a school in North London.
Corker Binning partners and employees also take an active role in a number of legal associations and services, and several commit a regular amount of time to pro bono work. Among those we contribute to are:
- Justice – the British Section of the International Commission of Jurists, the all party law reform society. Contact Peter Binning for more information.
- A psychiatric liaison service at the Central Criminal Court. The purpose of this is to achieve better outcomes for defendants with mental health problems, accused of homicide. A very innovative and interesting project. Contact Robert Brown for more details.
- Index on Censorship - a freedom of expression organisation which gives awards to journalists and filmmakers from around the world who are persecuted for exercising freedom of speech.
- Free Representation Unit (FRU) - a registered charity which provides legal advice, case preparation and advocacy in tribunal cases for those who could not otherwise obtain legal support, through lack of personal means or public funding.
- Legal Aid Lawyers of the Year Awards (LALYs) – Robert Brown chaired the 2010 judging panel which recognises excellence among lawyers acting for some of the poorest and most socially disadvantaged people in society.
Throughout 2010 Corker Binning is supporting Liz Jameson, an exciting new artist based in South West England. For more information, click here
