The Vintskevich extradition and its implications for UK/Russian relations

Last week 32 year old Maxim Vintskevich became the first person in a decade to be successfully extradited from the UK to Russia. The Prosecutor General’s office in Moscow hailed the news as a breakthrough in Russia’s legal and diplomatic relations with the UK. Whilst the optimism is understandable, the outcome of Mr Vintskevich’s case masks deeper tensions in this most troubled of extradition relationships. To understand why it is unlikely to set a precedent for future extradition cases, it is necessary to unravel the recent history of Russia’s extradition requests in the UK’s courts as well as developments in the European Court of Human Rights (“ECtHR”) in Strasbourg.

Russian and CIS legal market in London still buoyant

A sell-out conference at the Law Society this week is proof positive of the continued interest that UK legal practitioners have in the development of the legal market in Russia. Billed as an opportunity for Russian and UK lawyers to promote legal links and businesses between the two countries, Russian Law Week is supported by the British-Russian Law Association and the Anglo-Russian Law Association.

British Russian Law Association celebrates a successful 2011

The Annual General Meeting of The British Russian Law Association (BRLA) took place at The Reform Club in London last night. At this well attended event, the re-elected Chairman Professor Bill Bowring thanked Rupert D’Cruz for his tireless and unselfish efforts during his 20 years as a leader of the organisation. Robert Brown, partner, Corker Binning was also re-elected as Vice-Chairman of the Association.

Closer ties with Russian lawyers – new initiatives

Two initiatives this winter will significantly enhance professional relations between lawyers qualified in England and Wales and those qualified as advocates in the Russian Federation: the new Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) and the Young Lawyers Exchange Scheme which will be launched in February 2012. Both are supported by the British Russian Law Association (BRLA) which last night held a joint seminar with the Law Society on the new QLTS.
